Sustainable garden and landscape design services.

Welcome! I love to talk plants and how we can work with the earth surrounding our homes to establish a harmonious relationship between wildlife, humans, plants, and our environment as a whole. If I were to play favorites, native plants, climate-conscious, water-wise plants, pollinator plants, and food gardens (fruits, vegetables, flowers, and herbs) would be high on my list to integrate into designs.

I want to hear what your vision is for the land that surrounds you and help connect you together in a new way. You will often see pathways in the gardens I design. Garden “maintenance” is easy when you have an established pathway connecting you more closely to the plants around you, encouraging you to take in the view daily with varying plant heights, smells, and textures. I also enjoy designing with reduced lawns or no lawn at all because we really can do so much better than a lawn. Plants and connectivity are the focus of all my designs! I look forward to working with you to connect you to the earth around you at a heightened level.

See you soon!

About Nuthatch

How did I arrive at the name Nuthatch Garden Design?

"Nuthatch" is to honor the birds inhabiting the outdoor space around my home, who inspire me and whom I value through my designs: from "Willa" the Red-Breasted Nuthatch, "Chit-Chat" the Spotted Towhee, and "Seedy" the Townsend's Warbler, to all the Juncos, Cooper's Hawks, Anna's Hummingbirds, Bushtits, White-Breasted Nuthatches, Pine Siskins, Red-Breasted Sapsuckers, Goldfinches, and all the others. Cedar Waxwings: I've offered you a crab apple tree, but I'm still waiting for your appearance. Where are you? I hope you'll fly through soon and find friendly habitat.

Land Acknowledgement

I acknowledge that the land on which I work is the traditional homeland of the Atfalati-Kalapuyan people. The Atfalati-Kalapuyan people and their descendants are the time-honored human knowledge holders on the native plants and creatures that inhabit the Willamette Valley.

My knowledge of native plants relies on observing the plants, insects, birds, and soil, and listening to teachers, Indigenous knowledge holders, researchers, and other experts. I am first and foremost a learner and observer. I strive to honor the natural world by helping others steward outdoor spaces into ecologically relevant habitat and sanctuary for creatures both large and small, human and insect.
