Before and After: A Living Habitat in a Neighborhood of Builder-Grade Yards
VIBRANT POLLINATOR HABITAT WITH FLAGSTONE PATHWAY
Project Description:
This backyard began as a blank slate — dirt, bark mulch, and fencing, just like every other new-construction yard on the block. Today it's the exception. A meandering flagstone pathway winds through layered native and ornamental grasses and pollinator plants, leading to a private sit spot shaded by a custom three-panel trellis wrapped in star jasmine. What's made the space come alive, though, is the natural seasonal changes in the plants and what they've attracted: the homeowner regularly points out dragonflies passing through, a variety of bees working the plantings, and birds that have claimed the indented basalt boulder as their go-to bathing spot. As the trees mature, they'll add a shade canopy and another layer to the habitat — but even now, there's always something new happening and you feel immersed in your own oasis as you wander through.
What the Design Created:
- A pollinator habitat, built in layers — native and ornamental grasses and pollinator plants, intentionally selected to support bees, dragonflies, and birds year-round
- A neighborhood standout — dense, intentional planting in contrast to the bare dirt and mulch of surrounding new-construction lots
- A bonus feature: a boulder that doubles as a bird bath — the basalt stone's natural indentation collects water and has become a favorite spot for visiting birds
- Year-round color and texture — warm, varied plantings that keep the space interesting through every season
- An intentional walkabout — a flagstone pathway that turns a small backyard into an immersive, meaningful stroll through a lush and full landscape
- A private retreat — custom three-panel trellis and star jasmine create a screened, shaded sit spot
- Room to grow — maturing trees will add a taller canopy, deepening the habitat over time
